Got Funding! Get a Wellness Resource Network

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today announced awards of $1 million to each of 10 national non-profit organizations that support public health efforts to create a healthier nation. The awards are part of the Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) initiative, a comprehensive prevention and wellness program funded under the American Recover and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

The ARRA provided $650 million for a Prevention and Wellness Fund to implement proven strategies to reduce risk factors for chronic disease and promote wellness in both children and adults. Communities Putting Prevention to Work emphasizes the need for increased levels of physical activity, improvednutrition, decrease in smoking prevalence, and reduction in national obesity rates.

The awardees of $1 million each are:
American Academy of Pediatrics – an agency committed to the attainment of optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
American Heart Association – whose mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
American Lung Association – the leading organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.
Association of American Indian Physicians – headquartered in Oklahoma City, the AAIP strives to improve the overall health of American Indian and Alaskan Native communities.
BlazeSports America – an organization whose mission is to advance the lives of children and adults with physical disability through sport, healthy lifestyles and the prevention of chronic health conditions.
• Community Food Security Coalition – the CFSC is dedicated to building strong, sustainable, local and regional food systems that ensure access to affordable, nutritious and culturally appropriate food to all people at all times.
National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund –The NALEO Educational Fund strives to increase the effectiveness of Latino policymakers, mobilize the Latino community to engage in civic life, and promotes policies that advance Latino civic engagement.
National Recreation and Parks Association – NRPA is the leading advocacy organization dedicated to the advancement of public parks and recreation opportunities. “Healthy Lifestyles – It starts in Parks”
Sesame Workshop – Not just the ABC’s and 123’s, the Sesame Workshop also prepares children for the challenges that await them by providing life lessons in health and wellness, respect and understanding, and emotional well-being.
Society for Public Health Education – SOPHE is an independent international professional organization that promotes healthy behaviors, healthy communities and healthy environments.

In addition to these new grant awards, HHS will soon launch a National Prevention Media Campaign that will deliver advertisements to complement and support the work of CPPW. A contract for $28 million was recently awarded to the Academy for Educational Development (AED). This new media contract will also develop consumer materials for First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign aimed at preventingchildhood obesity.
